October 2019 - What can I say? This is the 5th year we have been and despite some rather dodgy weather it has been superb! Rachael and Charles very welcoming-bit like coming home! Saw a good selection of bird life and deer on the reserve everyday. Good walks for our dear old (very old) dog as well. Decent pubs with 1st class food include The Anchor , Babbling Brook in Shurton , Friendly Spirit - all nice and local and all dog friendly.

It goes without saying we are already planning what to do when we come back next year.

October 2019 - A beautiful week here despite mixed weather the Marshes always have something to offer. On a grey drizzly day I was treated to a murmuration do Starlings , deer blinking through the mist and finally a sumptuous double rainbow.

Many thanks Charles and Rachael

September 2019 - Thank you Rachael and Charles for a lovely holiday in Quern Barn, which is one of the nicest holiday cottages we have ever stayed in. It is cosy, clean, comfortable and is extremely well equipped.

The cottage and grounds are in such a peaceful and tranquil location where it is easy to relax and chill out. We enjoyed the company of Homer and Lily (dogs) and also Rense the horse who is so intelligent he nearly talks to you.

We enjoyed the wildlife in the top orchard and the whole Somerset area is excellent for bird watching and wildlife. We can suggest a visit to the Avalon Marshes and visitor centre, plus Westhay, Shapwick and Steart Marshes. Just for a local relaxed visit and you like gardens ,visit Cannington Walled Garden.

Good meals at The Hood Arms in Kilve and Sunday Carvery at the AnchorCombwich. Lots of nice towns and villages to visit.

We will recommend you to all of our family and friends looking for a lovely holiday cottage in Somerset. We hope to return.

September 2019 - We’ve had another lovely holiday at Quern Barn. In spite of some awful weather forecasts there have been plenty of sunny spells for us to enjoy. The Barn is as welcoming and comfortable as always with Charles and Rachael to look after us & keep us on the straight & narrow. The coastal path & countryside we know so well are still here and it is always nice to visit Combwich and enjoy them all over again.

September 2019 - Very enjoyable and welcoming stay thanks to Rachael and Charles and Rense the horse. Good walks on the Marshes , Cothelstone Hill, Kilve and best of all along the coastal path from Blue Anchor to Minehead ( return by steam train). A bit of retail therapy at Clark’s Village and Wells then return via Wedmore and Burnham.

Plenty more still to do so look forward to returning.

October 2015 “Apparently we were the first and last visitors to Quern Barn in 2015 and I suspect we are among the most delighted to have been here.We really appreciate this comfortable well thought out accommodation and the warm welcome we received. As in February we have not travelled very far and have mostly been exploring WWT Steart Marshes which is a real wonder. The creation of the new Marshland habitat is a wonderful example of nature conservation and really captures the imagination. It has been a joy to see so many Shelduck, a Barn owl and also Great White Egrets for the first time.Mostly it has been wonderful to see farmland so quickly change into mudflats with new plant life and birds very quickly populating it”

Have tried many local hostelries. Fantastic lunch at The Rising Sun at West Bagborough (huge portions). Very quiet with bird life in abundance around the pond and in the paddock. The resident badgers even put in an appearance for my wife. Can recommend the beautiful walks around the WWT reserve with ample photographic opportunities. Also plenty more reserves around Westhay Moor. Best local pub was The Hood at Kilve – very friendly and welcome dogs. We will be back next year”

We had a great morning cycling around the Nature Reserve. A wonderful holiday. Thank you”

August 2015 “We came here for a mere university visit but thanks to the lovely cottage it grew to be a lovely holiday in the countryside. An escape from school stress, I was able to appreciate the little things in life such as bike riding across the marshes and seeing badgers for the first time. Thank you to Rachael and Charles for being such welcoming hosts. I hope to come back soon and once again immerse into the wilderness of Devon (Somerset) and it’s surroundings”

July 2015 "Thank you so much for the amazing stay! I loved every bit of it! The horse grooming, stable setting up and horse tea making will stay with me forever! Not to forget all the rest such as newt fishing, snake hunting, badger feeding and playing with the dogs. You have taught me and shown me so much whilst my stay in Quern Barn and for that I am terribly grateful! Thank you Charles Rachael, Rense, Lily and terrible Homer for making this one of my favourite and most memorable holidays!” ( A French 12 year old boy from Paris)

We have had a lovely week, the weather has held up, the cottage is beautiful and the hosts kind and generous. Our son is delighted with the Horses, Dogs, grass snakes and of course the badgers – it was a great evening watching badgers and sipping wine with Charles and Rachael.

A week is too short to see everything but we have pounded the M5 between Exeter and Bristol and also really loved Lynmouth and the Valley of rocks, plus ammonite hunting on Kilve beach. A good car very at The Friendly Spirit in Cannington and of course a friendly welcome at The Anchor in Combwich. Thank you so much” (His parents)

July 2015 “Another wonderful week here, we feel so relaxed after all of our walks in the nature reserve. It is truly a luxury to simply tumble out of bed and be so close to so many birds (in fact 3 swallows invited themselves into the barn on our first night.) The barn itself is so spotlessly clean and perfectly equipped.

June / July 2015 “Charles and Rachael take care of all sorts of animals : dogs, birds, horses, badgers and humans. Riverside Farm has been for us a Noah’s Ark, safely away from a crazy world. Once again you made everything so perfect that it is hard to leave , we hope to come back again next year”
